A proposal at Villa Melzi in Bellagio unfolds through one of the largest lakefront gardens on Lake Como — Roman and Egyptian statues, a Moorish pavilion, a Japanese pond, and uninterrupted views across the water. Vittore Buzzi photographs proposals, engagements, and portrait sessions here during normal opening hours, and is also the only photographer permitted to work in the gardens privately, outside public hours — including throughout the winter closure, when the timing of the moment is yours to choose.

Where the proposal happens

Villa Melzi is, by common consent, one of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como, set within one of the largest gardens on the lakefront. The grounds run right along the Bellagio shoreline, where the lake splits into its two southern branches. Conceived in the early 1800s alongside the villa as a single artistic-botanical composition, they were laid out in the English style but with an unmistakably Italian elegance — clean lines, open lakefront avenues, and, in the Romantic era that followed, exotic plants and landscape elements gathered from every continent. Roman and Egyptian statuary sits among the trees, alongside a graceful Moorish pavilion and a Japanese pond ringed with maples. It is one of the most photogenic settings on the entire lake, and unusually varied — within a short walk you move from open lakefront light to shaded, sculptural corners.

For a proposal, that variety is the point. The reveal can happen on the shore with the water behind you, the celebration portraits among the statues and avenues, the quieter frames near the pond. One location, several completely different settings.

How a Villa Melzi proposal works

There are two ways to photograph here.

The first is during normal opening hours, late March to the end of October, when the gardens are open to visitors. Sessions are timed around the quieter parts of the day — early morning or the last hours before closing, for the softest light and the fewest people in frame. I plan the route in advance so the moment itself stays private even in a public setting, and the same rules that apply to every visitor apply to the shoot.

The second is by private arrangement, outside public hours — and this is where a Villa Melzi shoot becomes genuinely rare. I'm the only photographer permitted to work in the gardens when they're closed to the public, both in the early and late hours during the season and throughout the winter closure. What that makes possible is best explained in conversation, because the right approach depends on your plans, the season, and the moment you have in mind. It's something we shape together rather than something to standardize on a page.

Off-season: a private session, on your schedule

From early November to mid-March the gardens are closed to the public. A private session during the closure means the proposal can be set for the exact time we choose rather than the time opening hours allow — the moment is genuinely yours, with no other visitors. It also builds in flexibility: Lake Como weather in winter can turn, and being able to choose the day and the window means we can wait for the right light rather than work against it. For couples who want a quiet, unhurried, once-in-a-lifetime setting, it's often the most beautiful way to do it.

The best times of year

The gardens change character with the season, and two windows stand out for a proposal.

Late April into the first two weeks of May is the spring peak: the villa's historic camellias — around 250 of them, some dating back well over a century — come into full color alongside the azaleas and rhododendrons. It's the most vivid the gardens get all year, soft and saturated.

Then in October and into November, the foliage turns. The Japanese maples and the older trees across the grounds move through reds and golds, and the light grows lower and warmer. For couples who want atmosphere over brightness, the autumn weeks are spectacular — and they sit right alongside the start of the private off-season window.

Both extend naturally into the private-session options above: a May morning before the gates open, or a November afternoon with the gardens to yourselves.

What you receive

Coverage of the proposal as it happens, followed by a relaxed engagement portrait session through the gardens. Galleries are delivered through a private online gallery. Sessions start at 1 hour; the right length depends on how much of the gardens you want to cover and whether you're adding locations elsewhere in Bellagio or across the lake.
A separate location fee, payable to Villa Melzi, applies for photography in the gardens — this is in addition to the photography session itself. The current amount and how it's arranged are part of what we cover when we talk.

Let's plan it together

The best Villa Melzi proposals start with a conversation. Fill in the contact form with a few details — your dates, what you have in mind — and we'll set up a short call on WhatsApp or Google Meet to talk through the options, the timing, and what's possible for your moment. Every proposal here is planned individually; the call is where it takes shape.

FAQ

Can you propose at Villa Melzi in Bellagio?

Yes. The Gardens of Villa Melzi are a beautiful setting for proposals and engagement shoots. Sessions can be photographed during normal opening hours, and — uniquely — by private arrangement outside public hours, including during the winter closure. The private option is planned individually; the best first step is to get in touch and talk it through.

When are the Villa Melzi gardens open?

The gardens open to the public daily from late March to the end of October. From early November to mid-March they are closed — which is precisely when private, fully scheduled proposal sessions become possible.

Is a winter proposal at Villa Melzi a good idea?

It can be the best option. With the gardens closed to visitors, you choose the exact moment, and the flexibility to pick your day means you can plan around the weather rather than be caught out by it.

How long should a Villa Melzi proposal shoot be?

Most couples combine the proposal with an engagement portrait session through the gardens. Sessions start at 1 hour; an hour to two hours is typical for Villa Melzi alone, more if you're adding other Bellagio or Lake Como locations.

When is the best time of year for a Villa Melzi shoot?

Two windows stand out. Late April to mid-May brings the camellias, azaleas, and rhododendrons into full bloom — the most colorful the gardens get. October into November brings the autumn foliage, with warm low light and the maples turning red and gold. Both are spectacular for very different moods.

Where is Villa Melzi?

On the lakefront in Bellagio, Lake Como, a short walk from the ferry terminal. It's easily combined with other Bellagio locations or reached by boat from across the lake.
